Have you seen this ad while driving through the streets of Pakistan?
Every time I see it, it makes me a little bit angrier. For those of you who do not understand Urdu or Hindi, the ad’s tag line is “Pankhay ke tarha chalayen” i.e. Run it (or use it) like a fan. This line encourages users to think that by using the Gree Inverter air conditioner, they will use the same amount of electricity as a ceiling fan.
Considering the severe energy crisis we are facing in Pakistan at the moment, with a 30% shortage of supply compared to electricity demand, this advertisement is very irresponsible. In addition, it is making a statement that is a lie, or at least a selective truth. And it is a lie that many consumers believe, as has been seen by discussions on many Pakistani forums.
Moderately efficient 56″ ceiling fans use 80W of electricity. If you run one energy efficient ceiling fan for 10 hours every day, at the end of the month, you will end up paying Rs. 240-500 for your electricity bill per fan based on whether you are a domestic or commercial customer, and what electricity tariff you are paying.
However, a Gree 1 ton AC (12000 BTU) that does not use an inverter, consumes on average about 1080-1250W of power, based on the model, as you can see on our air conditioner comparison page. The best inverter air conditioners in the market consume on average 450-500W of power per ton. Is Gree saying that its inverter air conditioners use 80% less power than the most energy efficient models in the world? It cannot really be saying that since even in the ad shown above, Gree says that the AC uses up to 60% less than what we assume are the non-inverter air conditioners that Gree manufactures. That means, in the best case scenario, Gree’s inverter AC uses 432W of power on average.
If you look at Gree’s specifications for its inverter AC, shown below, you can see that the lowest amount of power that their 1 ton inverter AC uses is 220W.
Now 220W is nearly 3 times higher than a moderately efficient ceiling fan. What is important for Gree to clarify is under which circumstances does the inverter AC use just 220W of power. Is that the case when there is not much difference between the temperature outside and inside the room, for instance in our mild winters? Is it when the dehumidifier or “Dry” option (a very important part of feeling cool) is turned off? Please clarify to us what is the average amount of power that the 1 ton inverter AC will consume on an average summer day (34-36 degrees Centigrade) in Pakistan if the AC is set to cool the room to 26 degree Centigrade.
Even if we assume that the Gree inverter air conditioner is as efficient as the best ACs in the world, then a 1 ton unit will use 500W of power on average. That means that when this air conditioner is run for 10 hours every day, then at the end of the month your electricity costs for running this AC will be between Rs. 1500-3150 per month. While this may be 30-50% lower than what your air conditioner is currently costing you, it is still 6 times higher than what a ceiling fan will cost in electricity bills.
Gree actually does produce moderately efficient air conditioners. They are a good product in our Pakistani market, which overflows with inefficient appliances. However, please do not disrespect the intelligence of your consumers or the trust we place in you, nor produce advertisements that encourage irresponsible and ignorant behaviour from Pakistanis.
The worst part is that Orient has been impressed by Gree and has started a similar ad campaign for its air conditioners. Orient goes one step further by claiming that its inverter air conditioners use 80W of power, instead of just alluding to the power consumption of ceiling fans. I would ask Orient the same questions that I have asked Gree. Tell us the power consumption of this AC under real usage scenarios.
A much better ad from Gree is the one for Viola, which mentions that the air conditioner has received an A+ Energy Efficiency Rating from Europe, as seen in the energy rating label in the ad below.

Very comprehensive explanation. So sir what will u suggest a DC inverter Ac or a regular split Ac ?
It is not happened for first time in pakistan that big and reputable manufacturers misguided pakistani customers, even in 80’s Matsushita ( Nation color tv manufaturer ) claim for thier only 4 color tv in clude yellow . the truth was all tvs has all color to display . and . it was totaly a lie by company working under japenese supervision, they did joke or underestimate our peoples. This was just because nobody is here to ask them , we are just need to sit in Metrobuses. Gree and orient doing the same , people already confused about solar energy system and its power calculation , i my self heared a shopkeeper saying that invertor ac can run on 600 watts (commonly used ) ups
He was sure of that. Which can be problem for many who want to use invertor ac
I appriciate you on what you told in this blog
You do the right thing inform and educate our peoples
Also request to such companis please tell the right things , no doubt inverter ac is far better than conventional ac .
Advertising for inverter ACs can be very deceptive. In Pakistan, with no insulation, outside air temperature at 35 Celsius, a 1.5 ton, 1800 Watt conventional air conditioner will take 4-5 hours running at full power to reduce the temperature of a moderate size room by about 10 degrees, and then needs a power output of about 1200 Watts to maintain that temperature. An inverter driven AC makes only small difference to the overall energy demand. Inverter ACs can be very economical to run but only when used in a well-insulated and sealed room. Such buildings are almost non-existent in Pakistan. With 25% load shedding, the AC will normally be running at full power whenever the power is available and the inverter will make almost no difference to the power consumption.
@ James T I partially agree with your point here but on the other hand If an inverter AC of correct capacity is installed it will definitely make a difference. Although the compressor will run at full capacity, but an inverter AC will save the startup currents which are 4-5 times higher than the normal operating current.
Secondly, despite all the loadshedding and lack of insulation, i have observed that ACs in our bed rooms and offices keep turning their compressors on and off. So the advertising for inverter ACs in not deceptive maybe.
orient ac best or gree i want ac but i am cofeused ….

Boss…First of all you totally misinterpreted the Ad. Fujitsu-General, a leading global brand and LG are advertising the same…not just in india but also in Europe. The concept of the advertising tag line is that……..You can run your Inverter AC instead of your ceiling Fan at a cost lesser than running your ceiling fan (In FAN Mode)… “IN FAN MODE” is what is always missed while mentioning which misleads many and that’s where their market is…in the ignorant’s hand.
Very very much disappointed after installing kenwood dc inverter 1ton and belive me this dc inverter tech is useless my electric city bill increased eventually..i was using lg 1 ton ac and the bill was around 5 to 6 k and now after installing the kwnwood dc my bill is 8k 550 units just a crap…if it will save 60% so where is dat damn 60% shame on these kenwood dc inverters..please share your expriences
so u don’t recommend kenwood dc inverter which else do u recommend my room size is 14ft wide by 26ft long double story,
I do recommend Kenwood, since it is the only brand to have been rated for energy efficiency from India and received 5 stars. India’s energy efficiency rating is based on running the AC for 1600 hours in a year under South Asian climate. EU’s rating label is based on running the AC for only 350 hours per year in a European climate.
I have been using Gree inverter AC and there has been no change in bills so looks like its just a lie that it saves 60% energy from a normal AC.
Maroof and Rizwan have verified that inverter ACs won’t help you save much, if anything, on your electricity bill in buildings without effective insulation. The salespeople are not necessarily lying: they are provided with literature written for European or US marketing campaigns, and know little about the underlying technology and its limitations. In Europe and the USA, buildings are insulated, so some modest energy saving is possible using inverter ACs. However, in Pakistan, you can expect little or no saving compared with a conventional AC without effective insulation.
Mujhy suggest kro kon sa ac loon pel company kesi hy
Compresser needs electric power to run. No one explained, what does inverter mean. If inverter will reduce power consumption, compressed needs? Will some one expert explain?
An inverter will not reduce power consumption, its main work is to convert DC power into AC power…… means it can convert battery power into usable AC poewer to run household appliances…..
If you need to reduce power consumption, please buy a solar panel that will take energy from the sun and will reduce your electricity bill also.
David, I think you are mixing up inverter Air Conditioner with an inverter. They are two different things. We are discussing the inverter air conditioner here, which does save a lot of energy if you use a good brand.
Compresser needs electric power to run. No one explained, what does inverter mean. If inverter will reduce power consumption, compresser needs? Will some one expert explain? I assume that if inverter can convert a.c current in to d.c current and stored in a battery if any provided in ac inverter then energy saving is possible.
Mujy english zyada ni ati urdu chaly gi ?????
Ok invertor ac pehly to dekhna chahye k room size kya hay. Room ager. 1.5 ton ac wala hy to wahan invertor lora kaam kary ga ab ager room size theek hy and normal ac aap 5 hour chalta thaa jab k invertor app ki koshish hogi k sara din invertor ki maa chodo to bhai bill ny lun kam hona hay .
Ager ap ka room 30 tep per hy to 30 mint tak ager 26 tak aa jye to aap ac 27 per rakho phir dekhna invertor ka kmal aur ager aap nyac chalaya he 18 per hay to us nay L ….. kaam kerna hay aap b kehty ho gy k kya lun lun laga rakhi hay. 🙂
Welldone very good comments
Using orient dc inverter 1 ton for a month now and the bill has reduced substantially by 60%.
Brother umer
So you mean that orinet DC inverter beeter then gree DC inverter
Best regards Amjad Saudi
Dear brother are you sure about 60â„…
I ask many people in Faisalabad which DC inverter ac in Pakistan all say about gree DC inverter
Best regards Amjad
Dear umer . Which model you have Orinet DC Invert
Best regards
Which orinet DC invrrter you have
I think my Experince is Gree and orient doing the same because people have already confused about solar energy system and its power calculation. That’s why peoples wants Solar Panels in Pakistan.because crisis of electricity shortage these days in Pakistan.
Misleading advertisements are already part of the marketing strategies of a couple of companies. I am actually wondering why nothing seems to be done about it. In the end, it goes back to “caveat emptor”. Visit Adelaide Air Conditioning Installation Services
tante saya menggunakan AC gree sudah lama, alhamdulillah belum pernah terjadi apa-apa dalam pembayaran listrik pun sangat sesuai ….

Great video!
I have four companies 1.5 ton inverter ac. Mitsubishi gree and kenwood and haier. All are inverter. Kenwood mitsubishi and gree they all are consuming 2.00 to 2.20 amp at 26 to 27 temp. But haier 1 ton inverter is consuming 5 amp. Haier the rejected inverter ac.
Thank you for the detailed current readings. They are very useful to know.
Idiot govt that allows such lies to fool public.
It’s hard to come by experienced people about this subject, however, you sound like you know what you’re talking about! Thanks
I bought Gree 1.5 inverter AC observed outdoor unit off when room temperature meets the required temperature is it okey for inverter to remain the outer unit off and restart after sometime i heard that in inverter the outer unit runs with low ampere but never turns off please guide on this My Ac when it starts it goes upto 1500 watt and when it meets the room temperature it continues to work at 800 watts and suddenly it drops to 150 watts at this time the outer units remains off and it restarts after some time and goes up to 850watts
I can be contacted on the following number please anyone guide me on this
